5 things to expect from a yoga class at Downward Doulas

(and one that you should not.)

Outdoor yoga?  On a farm??  What in the world?  Here at Downward Doulas, we believe that people should reconnect with their surroundings and truly experience our environment.  Doing yoga outside connects us with yogis from centuries past.

  1. Rain and Shine!
We will practice under clear skies, as well as during rain showers.  We have a gorgeous deck for fair weather practice and space in our greenhouse high tunnel for rainy days. When truly appreciating nature, you have to love her in the beautiful days and the not so pretty ones.  Each type of weather brings with it different blessings and we want you to embrace those with us!
  1. You Will Feel It!
If we do our job right as your yoga instructors, you should feel it the next day, or two, even if just a little bit.  Whether we went through a super-stretchy practice, or a challenging long pose holding one, your body might feel a little looser or maybe slightly sore in those quads. Yoga is a practice that requires you to acknowledge your limits and then try to push past them just a bit; this is growth!  We will encourage you to stretch a little further if you can, but never to the point of experiencing pain.
  1. Laughter!
We know that you’ve seen the very swami like yoga instructors online.  That’s not us!  One thing we love about yoga is that you can’t take it or yourself too seriously.  Try doing happy baby or puppy pose without laughing at how silly you feel.  And laughter has lots of positive benefits too, like reducing stress and releasing endorphins.
  1. Bugs...ugh!
One thing about nature that we cannot control are the bugs.  We are doing yoga at a farm.  There will be flies, bees, ants, etc.  We don’t spray the bugs, but we will spray ourselves if they are too much.  Feel free to bring your favorite insect repellent if you are like us, a mosquito's favorite snack.  We will also use tiki torches if that seems appropriate.
  1. Anointing!
When learning about yoga, my first yoga instructor ended every class by anointing us with lavender oil.  I actually did not love doing yoga right from the beginning - but I did love being anointed.  I have had many students tell me that they will do any pose I tell them to if I promise that there will be anointing at the end.   We promise you won’t be attacked by lavender oil.  We’ll casually mention during final relaxation that we’ll be going around and if you don’t want to be anointed, to just lay your hands on your belly.

The one thing that you will NOT find at Downward Doulas is competition.  We are happy that  you have taken the time to work on yourself.  Each of us is on our own journey and we want you to come to yoga wherever you are on yours.  We are here to support you and build you up on your path.  We want to celebrate with you as you reach your personal goals.

10 Reasons You Should Try Yoga at Downward Doulas

3/26/2021

Here at Downward Doulas, Missy and I know that doing yoga has changed our bodies and  minds for the better.  I had to convince Missy (for years) how good yoga feels and all the benefits that come from it.  It was not until she finally relented and came to some of my classes that she began to see and feel a difference in her body.  When I had to take a break from teaching yoga, she found herself seeking out other yoga options to feed her need for it.  It took some prodding but I did eventually persuade her to start her journey as a registered yoga trainer and now we are in the business of helping others find yoga for themselves.

We practice traditional yoga with a twist. (Pun intended.) We strive to make every yoga class fun and enjoyable.  We will do yoga with a goat, we will do yoga on a boat.  We will sip and stretch and acrobalance with a partner.  We are always looking for new ways to practice this ancient art. Below are 10 reasons we think you should come and practice yoga with us!

1. Yoga practice outside is traditional
When yoga is practiced traditionally, yogis practice outside.  Being outside allows for fresh air and vitamin D.  You get the added benefit of being on a beautiful farm surrounded by nature.

2. Yoga will help you feel better
Practicing yoga has been known to reduce stress and calm feelings of anxiety.  There’s a lot of science to back this up.  We have seen this to be true in our own practice.  The more yoga we practice, the better we feel, physically and mentally.

3. Yoga will make you look better
We know that doing a workout just to look better may be motivation enough for some people.  For us, looking better from yoga comes from strengthening our bodies but also feeling better about ourselves as humans. The confidence that comes from practicing yoga shines from you!

4. Yoga will increase your ability to balance
Balance has been found to be a key indicator in athletes’ injuries.  Those that have better balance are less likely to get hurt during workouts and games.  This is also true of elderly people.  Those that have good balance are less prone to falls and injuries that result from them.  It has also been linked to helping alleviate balance disorders.

5. Yoga outside is great if you are gassy during your practice
This is a very practical reason.  If you are doing a full yoga practice, digestion will be encouraged.  This can lead to all sorts of stomach noises and gassy emissions.  Being outside allows for fewer people to experience them.  And you could always blame the smell on the farm animals.

6.
Yoga will improve your sleep
Yoga has been proven to help you fall asleep quicker, stay asleep longer, and go back to sleep more quickly.  Not sure about you but we need this now more than ever!

7.
Yoga will make you stronger
The nature of yoga, whether practicing vinyasa style or yin yoga, is to use your own body weight to grow stronger.  This strengthens your core and individual muscle groups.  You will begin to feel it after your first class.

8.
Yoga can help focus your mind
Many of the techniques in yoga focus on your breathing and clarity.  This is most evident in final relaxation when you are asked to clear your mind and focus on intention.  This does not come easy in today’s society.  We have to practice it together in class and on our own to get our mind back under our control.

9.
Yoga can improve your health
Multiple studies have shown that practice increases heart health, improves flexibility, reduces weight, and improves the overall wellness of the practitioner.  If you ask us, we have seen even greater improvements in mental health, as well.

10.
Brooke and Missy are the best!
We may be a little biased here but we love spending time with each other and our friends.  Having set times to be together adds to our friendships with each other and our practicing yoginis.  Many of our yoga students also consider us friends and family.

Our BEST Doula Training Experience...

3/2/2021

Missy has been a certified doula through DONA for 10 years and her certification was up for renewal.  I was looking for an organization to get my initial credentials. I asked all of my doula friends who they went through and why before finally landing on BEST Doula Training.  If you are interested in becoming a doula or childbirth educator, take a look for yourself. The best part was that we could do the training together and have the words to communicate about our business.

Why BEST?  They offered the easiest and one of the most comprehensive programs out there.  The program is super inclusive and includes training in trauma sensitivity, c-section and induction care, and racial inequalities in healthcare.  All things that are important to me.  I was also pleasantly surprised at how easy the precertification training was to navigate.  They had a reading list of books, podcasts, meditations (which appeal to my yogi side), and videoed births that demonstrate so many of the topics we learned about during our research. All the lessons and readings had to be completed before our in person training.

But how was the training?  We were greeted like old friends as we entered a training suite in Atlanta.  There were other women in the room and lots more joining us virtually.  To say that the training was jam packed with information is an understatement.  We were busy learning from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. with just a lunch break to rest out spinning minds.  We covered comfort measures and counter pressures, branding and marketing, signs and stages of labor, and everything in between. We were encouraged to practice everything that we learned by getting down on the floor with our classmates and recreating scenarios and how we would respond.  The virtual students were encouraged to partner with others online or in their home to do the same thing and share in these experiences. Three very full days later, we emerged with tests in our inbox and dreams of brand new babies in our heads.

How were the other people? The other people in the group were wonderfully diverse.  We had those from all over the country, in all walks of life, educational backgrounds, and experience levels. Some of us have already had births of our own and others were so young they haven't had time enough for that yet.  We were all there because we believe that everyone should have someone to support them during this miraculous time of birth.  We laughed a lot and even shared a few tears but all left feeling like we were now part of a larger sisterhood.

What now?  We have joked for years that one day we would be doulas and business partners.  I've even had a pinterest board called "my future career as a doula" for as long as I can remember.  Now is the time.  We are opening our outdoor yoga studio and wellness center so that we can help as many people as we can live the lives they've imagined they could. Doula services are a large part of that.  When the whole person is healthy and happy, the family gets stronger, relationships improve, and children thrive. We can't wait to see where this journey takes us!
